It feels good, the 6-3, 280-pound Burke told . My mom is happy because I can play close to home.
A Queens native, Burke transferred to Pope John from Grand Street following the 2016 season, and has since seen his recruitment take off. Hence, he now has a number of options.
As of right now, I wouldnt know if Ill end up at Rutgers, he said. Temple is still at the top, but Rutgers will be up there.

The staff has shown interest in Burke for months as they have a relationship with new Pope John offensive coordinator Bruce Eugene, who also left Grand Street for Pope John, and was instrumental in Rutgers signing his former players Kamaal Seymour and Ahmed Bah.
Hes a weight room beast. Its just crazy. When he transferred into Pope John, he weighed 235, and he gained 45 pounds in pretty much a month-and-a-half, Eugene said in April. But it was 45 pounds of muscle. He looks like hes 250 but hes 280. He carries the weight well. You can put 30-to-40 more pounds on him. He has a big butt, big thighs, big legs. Hes got a trunk. So right now what hes doing a lot of really just preparing himself and getting his upper body stronger.
Burke has really attacked his workouts since ascending to Pope John, which in effect contributed to him earning his Rutgers offer.
Rutgers has liked my film for a long time, they just wanted to come see me workout. So today, coach Jay Niemann came down along with coaches from UConn and Virginia. And coach Niemann was just watching the workouts and stuff like that.
And at the end of the workouts, coach Chris Ash called coach Brian Carlson, my head coach, and he was on the phone with him for like five minutes. And at the end of the conversation, he said he was offering me a full scholarship.

Burke has a chip on his shoulder, due to being overlooked up until now. And the offers just add fuel to the fire.
I was happy because its another offer, he said. Its another way to prove the people who doubted me wrong.
Burke will likely camp at Temple Sunday and Rutgers on June 3. And hell use his opportunity to tour the campuses and propel his relationships with coaches from both schools.
As for Rutgers, the Knights appear situated well.
I like the campus, its nice and big, he said. And mainly, they set their players up for after the game, because the majority of the time, not everybody is going to the NFL.
They dont only set their players up for football. They set them up for after the game career readiness.
In 2016 as a sophomore, Burke accumulated 48 tackles and three sacks, despite missing two-and-a-half games.
He currently holds offers from Maryland, Purdue, Temple, Florida Atlantic, Old Dominion and now Rutgers. Meanwhile, coaches from Penn State, Arizona State, Florida, North Carolina and Florida State have also shown interest.
Burke will play both inside and outside in 2017, but projects best as a defensive tackle at the Power 5 level of play. And he has all the intangibles to help get him there.
He was recently named the Sports Entertainment Networks 2017 Showdown Defensive MVP at the D.C. Regionals, and also put forth a strong performance at The Opening N.J. Regional.
