Espiritu Vivo

Espiritu Vivo--Living Spirit--is in many ways an apt title for Susana Bacas new album. It was recorded in downtown Manhattan in the week following September 11, and though a heavy sadness hangs over it--presumably caught from the mood of the studio audience--its nonetheless a powerful affirmation of life. Susana Baca has long been the first lady of Afro-Peruvian music, but her unique artistry, which is on a level with that of Silvio Rodriguez and Mercedes Sosa, has now brought her deserved global fame. Her soft timbre is intimate, but here it communicates a wide range of emotions, from revolutionary fury to sisterly tenderness to surreal psychological dislocation. In strictly musical terms, this CD is clever: the ambient sound is often spacily electronic, but as the instrument in close-up is a guitar--sometimes handled with Elizabethan delicacy--and as the voice is as earthy as hers, the total effect is remarkably harmonious. --Michael Church
