He purposely left out that there would be a fee. In this case the fee was half the cost of the mattress.

This policy seems reasonable to me when considering that the returned mattress cant be sold again as new. I wonder if its just considered a loss and donated at that point.

What is unreasonable to me is misleading your customer to make a sale. Lying by omission is not a good sales tactic for repeat business.
